FedEx integration: rates, pickups, labels and tracking from the accounting system

Managers and agents never open the FedEx portal: rating, pickup requests, shipment submission, returns and tracking happen right inside the accounting system.

Context

The freight accounting system works with FedEx directly.

What was built

Pickups. Available windows, requests, rescheduling and cancellation — including from the client area.

Rates. Ground domestic, international and return rates; agents outside the drop-off area get the first-mile cost added.

Shipments. Shipment validation and submission, reprinting the international label.

Returns. Creating a return (RMA) and fetching its label.

Agents. Pickup and drop-off requests: an order, tracking numbers and one merged PDF with the documents are created.

Tracking and emails. Statuses are pulled every hour into the shipment history; the customer gets emails on submission and pickup.

How it works

The integration is a set of YAML workflows in the accounting system, not code in its core, so a change ships without a system release. Workflows sit on two levels: FedEx / Tasks / … tasks only talk to the service API, while business workflows take the order data, call the tasks and update the order, its history and attachments.

Scale: 27 workflows.

What it looks like

Pickup request by an agent: the Ready Time and Latest Time windows come from FedEx for the address and date. The screen is rebuilt from the app configuration, sample data

FedEx integration workflows in the system editor: names, descriptions and status are real, the date is the last change in the repository history
