USPS integration: domestic rates, address validation, return labels and tracking
The US Postal Service is wired into the accounting system: rates are calculated, addresses validated and return labels created and cancelled without leaving the system.
Context
The freight accounting system works with USPS directly.
What was built
Rates. Domestic shipping prices.
Address validation. The address is checked against the postal database before submission.
Return labels. Creation and cancellation; the tracking number and attachment are stored on the order, the event in its history.
Tracking. Statuses are pulled every hour on a schedule.
How it works
The integration is a set of YAML workflows in the accounting system, not code in its core, so a change ships without a system release. Workflows sit on two levels: USPS / Tasks / … tasks only talk to the service API, while business workflows take the order data, call the tasks and update the order, its history and attachments.
